The Association was started in October 1976 with 155 chartered members. Overall membership from October 1976 - February 2001 has been 316 members. Presently there are 182 active members, 42 of whom are Life members. Life member status is achieved once the member has reached 70 years of age. Incorporation papers were received on May 25, 1976. The original meeting location was at the Market Street Fire Hall and in the spring of 1983 a mortgage was obtained to purchase the present facility at 248 West Avenue. The property, originally the Flow Family Farm, was owned and occupied by William Flow, a member of the Exempts who later became Director. The Building Committee converted the old house, in need of some repair and upgrading, into a meeting facility. The first floor front rooms were left intact with original plaster scroll-work and chandeliers on the ceiling along with the curved wall to ceiling edges. The back part of the building was converted into a large kitchen and two sets of bathrooms. The second floor was converted to a small meeting room, office and activity room. The basement had an old dirt floor with field stone walls which were hand dug down to allow for a concrete floor. In the spring of 1984, work began on the outside of the facility; painting the house and having all roof overhangs insulated and covered with aluminum. In 1996, the siding was stripped off the building and the house was insulated and resided with vinyl.

At the time of purchase there were two barns on the property. The larger barn, in major disrepair, was burned down during a fire department drill in the spring of 1986. The smaller barn was renovated into a summer-time meeting room and picnic hall.

In 1991, the club proudly paid off it's mortgage some 12 years early. This incredible feat was accomplished through one of the club's main fundraisers is the monthly Lotto tickets (tickets are $5 per month, or $55 per year) and raffles.

The next major project was the addition to the original house. The old barn was shaky and repairs were more than the building was worth. In 1998, president Roger Smith and a special committee under the leadership of John Rombaut began plans for a new addition. Exempts club members contributed in excess of 4000 hours of their time and talents to the 40x70 foot addition. The new building's Certificate of Occupancy was received on June 2, 2000, and four days later the addition was used for a wedding. The Exempts Club facilities and grounds are available to all members and non-members. The newest addition is nicely decorated for special occasions and is air conditioned. A usage donation is requested to cover the cost of utilities.
